Fire Water Pump Skid Vibration

Challenge: Address vibration concerns on a diesel-engine-driven fire water pump skid base frame.

Approach: Equipment-weight static, modal and harmonic FEA under combined engine and pump excitation; stiffening options modelled.

Outcome: Stiffening design proposed with site-verification recommendations for vibration acceptance.

Problem / Requirement

Vibration concerns were reported on a diesel-engine-driven fire water pump skid base frame. The base frame had to be assessed under equipment weight and under the combined excitation of the engine and the pump, and a practical way to stiffen it had to be identified.

Engineering Scope

Equipment-weight static FEA: displacement and stress contours for the assessed model
Modal FEA: natural-frequency and mode-shape review (mode-shape displacement is not operating vibration)
Harmonic response FEA under combined engine and pump excitation at the reported frequency
Mounting-face X-direction velocity response of the engine and the pump across the analysed frequency range
Stiffening options modelled on the base frame and compared

Deliverables

Harmonic analysis report with response plots Static and modal FEA results for the assessed base frame Proposed stiffening design (base-frame arrangement with added members) Recommendations for site verification of vibration acceptance

Client Value Delivered

Stiffening design proposed with site-verification recommendations for vibration acceptance
Static, modal and harmonic results in one package, so the cause and the fix are reviewed together
Clear separation of mode-shape displacement from operating vibration avoids misreading the results

Standards Referenced

Project vibration criteria OEM limits for engine and pump AISC 360 (steel members, where applicable)

Software Used

Ansys Workbench (Mechanical) Hand calculations and code-based spreadsheets for independent verification
